Bārta - Upeskrasti (Nīca)
This approximately 20 km paddling route can be started at the bridge over the Bārta River on the Grobiņa–Bārta–Rucava road (P113). After the bridge, the landscape becomes wilder, and after 2.9 km the river winds back into a beautiful coniferous forest that continues for about 10 km. As along the entire Bārta River, this forest section features numerous small and large islands, buildings of distinctive architecture along the banks, and wide, scenic bends.
A great landmark and a place to stretch your legs is the old narrow-gauge railway bridge across the Bārta – the Vīle Bridge. A photo stop here is almost a must!
After the forest, the river current meets a large island, which should be passed on the right-hand side. The scenery then becomes more settled and agricultural, continuing for the next 7 km to the Nīca Bridge. Paddling past buildings of various styles and sizes keeps the views interesting and far from monotonous. The current remains steady, slowing only less than a kilometer before the Nīca Bridge. Here begins the dredged section of the river, with embankments clearly visible along the banks.
The trip can end at the Nīca Bridge or a few hundred meters further downstream at Upeskrasti, a well-equipped water tourism site.

The most suitable rivers for boating in the Priekule area are the Vārtāja, a right-bank tributary of the Bārtā in South Kurzeme. The longest tributaries are the Virga (29 km) and the Birztala (25 km). The largest settlements on the banks are Krote, Bunka and Krūte.
Although the Vārtāja River is no longer as wide or deep as it was in the times of the Curonians, both boaters and cyclists can still enjoy the wonderful landscapes of the Vārtāja ancient valley. There are plenty of gravel roads with beautiful landscapes and little traffic in the Priekule area that would be suitable for their travels.
