The most suitable rivers for boating in the Priekule area are the Vārtāja, a right-bank tributary of the Bārtā in South Kurzeme. The longest tributaries are the Virga (29 km) and the Birztala (25 km). The largest settlements on the banks are Krote, Bunka and Krūte.

Although the Vārtāja River is no longer as wide or deep as it was in the times of the Curonians, both boaters and cyclists can still enjoy the wonderful landscapes of the Vārtāja ancient valley.
