You will enjoy three different sections within the 7 km long route of the Fortress channel. The beginning of the route is artificially created and straightened stretch followed by the stretch of Tosmare lake - the right bank of the Fortress channel overgrown by reeds and at the end, shortly before the sea - naturally formed river stretch (Melnupe) with virgin shores.
The route will stay for the fans of military heritage and urban paddling and will be as a different alternative for spending your leisure time in Liepāja. It is recommended to paddle the Fortress channel during the spring and autumn time. During the summer time it is covered by green surface and paddling is not that enjoyable.
The channel is included in the fortification buildings system that was built almost all over the Liepāja at the end of the 19th century. The fortification building of the Fortress channel have never been involved in a real war action.

Laivojumu jāsāk pie Grīzupes ielas tilta, te ir labiekārtota laivās iekāpšanas vieta. Kanāla krasti te ir apauguši ar melnalkšņiem, kas sevišķi gleznaini izskatās pavasarī raisoties pumpuriem, vai rudenī krāsojoties maigi rūsgani. Pēc kilometru garas taisnes ir maršruta pirmā cietokšņa sala dēvēta par Luneti. Vēlams to apbraukt pa labo malu, jo paaugstinātā ūdenslīmenī var gadīties, ka kreisās puses tiltiņš ir nebraucams šķērslis. Aiz Lunetes pie kanāla labā krasta pienāk Tosmāres ezera jeb purvāja ainava. Zāļains un meldrains krasts, kas interesanti izskatās no laivas, bet izkāpt tajā galīgi negribas. Nākamā mākslīgā sala, jeb Redāns, ir pēc 3,5km. To jāapbrauc pa kreiso pusi, jo labā puse ir savdabīgs apendikss – garš līcis bez izejas uz galveno kanāla straumi. 5km pirms kanāla ietekas jūrā Tosmāres purvs maķenīt atkāpjas, dodot vietu kāpu mežam. Parādās priedes un zemas kāpas. Kilometru pirms jūras kanālu šķērso Viestura iela, kuras tilts kādreiz kalpojis par slūžām. Jocīgi, bet jāsaka paldies garnadžiem, kas nozaguši slūžu meniķa metāla aizvaru un kanāls te ir brīvi laivojams. Kanāla ieteka jūrā ir skaista un valdzinoša vieta, kur redzami veco piestātņu koka balsti un monstrozo fortu atkāpšanās jūras priekšā. Te kreisajā krastā ir arī labs laivojuma nobeiguma punkts un laivotāju atpūtas vieta pie kuras var piebraukt ar auto.
Cietokšņa kanāla laivojumu var pagarināt uzsākot to Liepājas ezerā vai Tirdzniecības kanālā (ap 10km). Jārēķinās ar nebraucamiem šķēršļiem dambju un Liepājas ielu veidā un bīstami augstiem viļņiem Liepājas ezerā pastiprināta vēja apstākļos. Jāņem vērā!
Vasarās Cietokšņa kanāls daudzviet aizaug ar peldošiem ūdensaugiem. Laivošanai tas netraucē, tomēr purva gāzes dēļ labāk izvēlēties pavasara vai rudens sezonu. Pastiprināta vēja un viļņošanās apstākļos laivojumu jābeidz pie jūras pirms liedaga. Ielaivošana Jūrā ar nepiemērotām laivām ir bīstama!
