Engure river, 28 km long, does not surprise with rocks, rapids and monumental landscapes; it is a cosy Kurzeme (Courland) stream, which begins its journey by flowing out from Usma lake and ends by flowing into Puze lake.

It attracts paddlers with its peaceful flow, untouched nature and the opportunity to reach the sea by paddling further through Puze lake, Rinda and Irbe.

  • Engure river is suited for canoes, kayaks and canoes
  • At Engure river one of the longest paddling routes in Kurzeme starts – by the Engure river, Puze lake, Rinda and Irbe rivers until the sea – 95 km, which is manageable in 4-5 days.
  • Usma lake territory, where the Engure river flows out from, is the reservoir of Moricsala (Morics island), where being at and paddling is only allowed with the permission of Kurzeme regional administration of the Nature protection institution. Contacts: + 371 63286000; kurzeme@daba.gov.lv
  • When paddling Usma lake be cautious! At enhanced wind conditions Usma lake is dangerous due to the waving. Infrequently there are waves 50 cm high with small interval between them, which is sufficient to scoop the boat.
  • If after the Engure river route you paddle further over the Puze lake, keep at the leeside as possible. Puze lake, similarly like Usma lake, rises a high and steep wave.
  • When paddling on Engure river, you will find kilometre signs, indicating distance till the Puze lake on the bridges and other landmarks.
