The Daugava is the largest river in Latvia. It flows out of the Valdai highlands in Russia, flows through Russia, Belarus and Latvia where it flows into the Baltic Sea, in the Gulf of Riga. In Latvia the Daugava is also one of the national symbols, which is often mentioned in literature and music. The river is associated with national strength and unity and is called as national destiny river. Total length of the Daugava is more than 1,000 km, but in Latvia - more than 300 km.
